Conscious Conversation Synopsis - Raising Feminist Kids
The meeting began with framing the conversation by what the term feminism meant to each attendee. Common themes that were shared related to the idea that women are people too and so it means equity for this population. This includes the inclusion and consideration of women when making decisions, ability for women to have their own space and make their own choices, and that society moves toward a decentralization of masculinity.
From there the group found solidarity in sharing challenges each has faced in racing kids as feminists. For many of those who either have sons or are a source of influence to a boy they know, intentionality was a strong topic. An example of this is the showing of women in positions of leadership and who are the protagonists in the stories that are read. Folks spoke about the challenge of fighting the “princess” stereotype for girls while simultaneously showing boys they can also like “girl things” and that those are not somehow lesser. But more so, when the children themselves notice and question disparities, it is both heartbreaking and difficult sometimes to explain in age-appropriate ways.
Interestingly, while some showed concern for children witnessing a division of parenting responsibilities and other labor and the impact this might have on how children relate to their partners and peers once adults, other participants cited their ability to shift the status quo as a win. As we moved into discussing wins in raising kids as feminists for the next part of the conversation, the group shared other points of pride. A major theme here was that of filling kids with the idea that anybody can be, play with, and do what they want. Conversations around consent was another theme – even if those sometimes backfired! Seeing differences in the environment our kids are being raised in versus our own experiences gives us hope for the future.
